A Fairy Tale to Sweeten Your Dreams
Once upon a time there was a girl; she thought she was going to be alone her whole life, living in the woods with her animal companions. She saw them fall in love and envied that. She worked inside and outside the house all day long, and knitted her sorrows at night. One night, she sat gazing up at the moon, sewing a scarf and thought, “Is there no one for me?” the next morning she set her clothes out to dry, for it was a beautiful day. The colors of the clothes drew the birds around. She had to shoo them away, for if not they’d take the very clothes she worked so hard to make. The one scarf she whispered her longing into was the most beautiful. In the yarn was gold thread, and the ends were pure gold. She held it dear to her, for she was going to give it to the one she loved. But the birds all wanted the golden thread to attract mates for themselves. They pleaded and begged her for the thread, and finally she let them have it. The birds were thankful and promised good luck. They gave her yarn of an ugly brown and said if she knitted a scarf out of that yarn, her true love will find her. That very night she sang as she knitted the scarf. In the morning she sang while she worked around the silent yard, until a rustling came from the bushes. She paid it no mind, assuming it was a deer to come and keep her company. She continued singing until a voice said, “That’s beautiful.” She was startled so badly that she dropped what she was doing and turned around. A man stood there, the most beautiful she’d ever seen. He asked her if he could have the ugly brown scarf. He said it was made with happiness. It was full of love. From then on, the two were united, never to part. And they lived happily ever after.
